5, Church Street, Peel, Isle Of Man, IM5 1hn
The application concerned 5 Church Street, Peel, a terraced dwelling near the junction with Christian Street and within the Peel Conservation Area. The existing windows were original timber sliding sash units in a state of disrepair, and the proposal sought to replace them on both the front and rear elevations, along with a new rear door. Because the property sits within a conservation area, the alterations were subject to tighter planning controls. The officer accepted the need for replacement given the windows' condition. The front replacement windows were approved on the basis that they retain the sliding sash method of opening and include glazing bars consistent with the original character. The rear windows replicate the glazing bars of the front units and are less prominent, being accessed only via a narrow lane.
The proposal was permitted because the replacement windows maintain the sliding sash style and glazing bars appropriate to the conservation area setting, the need for replacement was justified by the poor condition of the existing windows, and the rear elements are either well-designed or not prominently visible from public viewpoints.
