Permission was granted to alter and extend a redundant stone barn at Ballig Barn, Tynwald Mills, St Johns, to create a dwelling. The application was decided by the Planning Committee on 23 August 2007. The site is a disused stone barn to the east of the Tynwald Craft Centre, accessed via a road from the A3 to Tynwald Mill. The barn was noted as structurally sound with plumb walls, though it had no roof at the time. An attached single-storey stone workshop with a pitched roof was in active use. The officer recommended approval and the Committee agreed, granting permission subject to eight conditions.
The Planning Committee approved the application to alter and extend the redundant barn to create a dwelling. The officer also recommended approval. Eight conditions were attached to the permission.
Planning Circular 3/89
the conversion of existing redundant buildings where such conversion complies with planning circular 3/89 - Renovation of Buildings in the Countryside. Alternatively the Department may accept the expansion of existing facilities which have shown a positive previous contribution to tourism in the area. However, no approval will be granted to any development which would result in an adverse impact on the countryside whether this be from visual intrusion, the impact of traffic or car parking or inadequate arrangements for the servicing of the development.

Condition 1
The development hereby permitted shall commence before the expiration of four years from the date of this notice.
Condition 2
This approval relates to the drawing numbers 245-01 and 03 and information submitted as part of this application, date stamped 28th March 2007 along with the structural analysis/report dated 24th July 2007.
Condition 3
The external finishes of the extension must match those of the existing building in all respects.
Condition 4
All plumbing stacks must be constructed internally.
Condition 5
The roof(s) must be finished in dark natural slate.
Condition 6
No approval is hereby granted or implied to the rebuilding of any part of the structure if it is subsequently found to be unstable.
Condition 7
The proposed windows must be of timber construction.
Condition 8
Notwithstanding the provisions of the Town and Country Planning (Permitted Development) Order 2005 (or any Order revoking or re-enacting that Order) no external doors, roof lights or windows shall be replaced (other than those expressly authorised by this permission).
