Mr. J. McCracken, Ballamenaugh Farm, Lonan. Isle of Man.
Dear Mr. McCracken,
Director of Agricultural Services: Richard Lole
RECEIVED ON 22 SEP 2006 DEPT. OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Requirement for Agricultural Building at Ballamenaugh, Lonan
Following my recent visit to your farm, I am writing to confirm the details of my visit.
Proposal
To erect a dual purpose building, approximately 120ft x 40ft, to house cattle and store feedstuffs for livestock. Part of building to be slatted, with sufficient accommodation for approximately 50 cattle (young stock) on ad lib rations. The need for this building is to allow most if not all of the cattle on the farm (65 breeding cows plus associated young stock) to be housed during the winter. Current buildings on the farm can only accommodate approximately half of the cattle on the holding. The building is also required to allow the secure, dry storage of hay and straw for livestock feeding and bedding.
Justification
In general, when considering whether a building is justified in agricultural terms, the first issue that planning departments consider is whether there is justification for at least one full time equivalent (FTE) employed on the farm. The calculation is made using standard labour requirement data, and that calculation for your farming activities is shown following:
Total Standard Hours Requirement Ballamenaugh = 3225.60 hours Standard Full Time Equivalent (FTE) = 1900 hours Full Time Equivalents justified at Ballamenaugh = 3225.60/1900 = 1.70 FTE
On this basis there is justification for one full time equivalent employed in agricultural activities at Ballamenaugh. If you have any further queries on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely,
Andrew Macdonald. SAC Agricultural Adviser
