Buchan School, Westhill, Arbory Road, Castletown, Isle Of Man, IM9 1rd
Permission was granted at the Buchan School, Westhill, Castletown, for alterations to create an emergency exit. This involved converting an existing window into a doorway and erecting an external aluminium staircase on one elevation of the building. The officer report noted that the part of the building in question had no existing emergency escape route. The staircase was acknowledged as not being accessible to wheelchair users, but this did not prevent approval. The site sits outside the Conservation Area. The elevation receiving the staircase was considered to have no particular architectural merit, and the proposal was found to have no detrimental visual impact.
The Planning Committee approved the application. The officer report noted that the affected elevation has no particular architectural merit and that the aluminium staircase would not cause any detrimental visual impact. The works were also considered necessary to provide emergency escape from a part of the building that currently had none. The formal decision record lists 2 conditions.
Condition 1
The development hereby permitted shall commence before the expiration of four years from the date of this notice.
Condition 2
This approval relates to the installation of an emergency means of escape including staircase and door, all as shown in drawings 1a, 1b and 1c and the location plan and photographs all received on 15th June, 2005.
