Decision
- The use of the Barley Field for industrial commercial purposes has been approved under PA 01/0110, with road and drainage infrastructure subsequently being approved under PAs 01/0111 and 01/1978. Planning approval has since been granted for two phases of industrial starter units (PAs 03/00419 and 03/00977) and a car sales/hire centre (PA 03/00722) on the Barley Field.
- It is now proposed to erect a saw mill building on a vacant development plot within the Barley Field development, which will incorporate ancillary uses and provide car parking and landscaping within the site. It is the intention of the prospective user, Douglas Steam Saw Mill & Timber Company Ltd, to relocate its premises from Lake Road in Douglas to the Barley Field, incorporating the same ancillary uses as at present. This includes the Tile & Tool DIY Centre and offices and staff facilities to serve the building, all of which will be ancillary to the main saw mill use in terms of floorspace and activity.
- The building will be finished in the same style of panelling as that used on the adjacent industrial starter units, with the corporate colours of the building user incorporated into the scheme and a large glazed area around the main pedestrian entrance. The external storage compound will be fenced with a 3 metre high colour coated security fence, details of which are enclosed, whilst the front courtyard and main parking area will remain open with new tree and shrub planting at the perimeter.
- The main car park will be for use by customers and staff and will accommodate 31 vehicles, with six spaces for commercial vehicles at the front of the building. Much of the building will be used for the storage and handling of bulky materials rather than the accommodation of staff, and the front courtyard will generally be used for the picking up / dropping off of timber rather than the parking areas, and as such the parking to be provided will comfortably satisfy customer and staff parking requirements.
