20 April 2009 · Delegated
Thie Conneeyn, Station Road, Ballasalla, Isle Of Man, IM9 2dd
The proposal involved replacing two doors at Thie Conneeyn, a semi-detached traditional cottage on the western side of the A5 Douglas Road between Silverburn estate and the Whitestone roundabout. The front door was to be replaced with a solid panelled door featuring two square lights at the top, finished in black. The rear door, visible mainly to occupants and those accessing garaging at the rear, was also to be replaced. The officer found that the existing front door was not original and actively detracted from the appearance of the otherwise traditional property, making the proposed replacement clearly more appropriate. The rear door was considered unattractive but limited in its visibility, and the replacement was judged not to cause any further harm to the property's appearance. Permission was granted with two conditions, including a four-year commencement requirement and a condition tying the permission to the specific plans submitted.
The front door replacement was approved because the existing door was not original and harmed the character of the traditional cottage, while the proposed black panelled door with square lights was considered much more suitable. The rear door replacement was accepted on the basis that it would not worsen the appearance of an elevation with limited public visibility.
