Proposer’s Name: Lisa Leo Business Name: Little Manx Beach Huts
The proposed site has been identified for its proximity to public toilet facilities, water fountain, bus stop and 24 hour parking. Access from the paved area, adjoining the road, is level with the grassed area which will enable wheelchair and pushchair access. The location is adjacent to a pleasant area of the beach that is free of seaweed, offering wonderful beach and sea views with access to the Promenade to visit local shops including the café in Marathon Terrace.
The huts will be traditional in style with an apex roof covered in mineral felt. There will be a decorative overhang to the front onto the decking which will provide some shelter and shade. The design of the huts has been carefully considered to reflect a traditional beach hut aesthetic found across British coastal locations that will also reflect and compliment the surrounding Victorian architecture along the Promenade.
The theme of the beach huts will be reminiscent of the golden age of tourism for the Isle of Man, with Mid-century Modern styling based on the 1950s/60s era, when Douglas was a favourite beach location for holiday makers.
The exterior of the beach huts will be painted in a Mid-century Modern inspired colour. Each hut will be painted a single colour that will complement the colour of the other huts. The interior of the huts will be painted white and decorated with simple wooden furniture and will include reproduction vintage tourism posters depicting the Isle of Man.
This is comparable with hire costs for beach huts in the UK. It is lower than prices charged by Port Erin Beach Huts but that is to reflect the different facilities available in Port Erin and the potential difference in target market.
It is felt that this will appeal in particular to the following:
The beach huts will be predominantly for hire by the public although within this there will be provision for giving back to the local community. This could potentially involve complimentary use of the huts by local charitable organisations such as ‘Beach Mission’ to hold beach-based workshops similar to those carried out in the Summer in Port St Mary and Peel. In addition, there are plans to offer the chance of being drawn for a complimentary ‘Family Beach Day’ open to families of children attending local Douglas and Onchan schools in the Summer holidays.
Each hut will be equipped with:
Off-peak dates: April, May, September, October Peak dates: June, July, August Full day hire: 10:00am to 6:00pm Part day hire: 10:00am to 1:30pm / 2:30pm to 6:00pm
Additional events could potentially be held outside of these dates and hours, for example, an additional extended session to 9:00pm to watch the firework display held on Douglas Promenade.
There are also development plans to hold ‘pop up’ community events that would make use the beach huts out of season which could include, for example, a mini Christmas Market with local artisans selling locally made products.
In the event of an adverse weather warning happening during the season, the huts will close for that day and a full refund or replacement date will be given to clients.
The huts will be made off site and delivered to site in sections to be erected to minimise disruption at the site.
In the Winter months, a protective storm board the same colour as each hut will be added to the front elevation of the huts. This will provide added protection against any potential coastal overtopping whilst also maintaining the aesthetic of the huts. Regular checks will be made to the huts out of season. Annual maintenance and exterior painting will be carried out between November and January.
The interiors will be refreshed during February and March prior to re-opening of the huts in the April.
