The proposed development subject of this planning application is the construction of a disabled access ramp at Castle Rushen High School, Arbory Road, Castletown.
The existing building is a two-storey high school, situated off Arbory Road. To the northeast / front of the school are the school's tennis courts and car park and to the southwest / rear of the school are the school's playing fields.
The school is bounded by residential development to the southeast and agricultural lands / undeveloped lands to the southwest and northwest. On the opposite side of Arbory Road, to the northeast, is located The Buchan School.
A previous planning application was made in 2007 for the construction of mobile classrooms \& this application also included for the construction of a new access doorway in the main school, to which it is proposed the new ramp will provide access. The number of the previous application, which was granted, is Planning Application no. 07/01079/B
The current proposal is for the construction of a concrete ramp to facilitate access to and from the main school building by disabled pupils or staff to the mobile classrooms located to the rear of the school. The ramp will be constructed of in-situ concrete with galvanised steel railings and handrails. Minor alterations to the school's existing surface water drainage are proposed as part of the application, namely the provision of 2 no. new proprietary drainage channels to the landing \& base of the ramp, both of which will be connected to the existing surface water drainage.
The proposed ramp is located to the rear of the school and will not be visible from the main roads.
