14 November 2008 · Committee
Land At, Bishopscourt Farm, Lane From Bishopscourt To Bishopscourt Farm, Bishopscourt, Kirk Michael, Isle Of Man, IM6 2ey
This application sought approval in principle to erect a detached dwelling on land at Bishopscourt Farm, Kirk Michael. Two possible sites were put forward, both situated in an area of the Manx countryside not designated for new development. The Planning Committee refused the application on 14 November 2008. The decision acknowledged the personal difficulties faced by the applicants and their family, but concluded that these circumstances could not justify departing from established planning policy. The Isle of Man Strategic Plan policies protecting the countryside and directing new residential development to sustainable locations were central to the refusal. The case officer had also recommended refusal, and the committee's decision aligned with that recommendation.
The Planning Committee refused the application because the proposed sites lie outside areas designated for development. Building a new dwelling there would conflict with policies protecting the Manx countryside and requiring new homes to be located in sustainable, designated areas.
