Mylvoirrey Farm
Mylvoirrey Farm is a mainly grassland unit extending to approximately 330 acres, currently maintaining a breeding herd of 50 spring calving sucklers, 20 autumn calving sucklers, and a number of bought in store cattle. Approximately 80 acres are owned, the remainder being tenanted. The land at Mylvoirrey has been farmed by the Cleator family for over 20 years now, and added to with rented land over the years. Some of the cattle are outwintered on rented land, and some are in-wintered at Mylvoirrey. All of the cows are calved inside at buildings on Mylvoirrey.
At present there is no agriculturally tied dwelling house available to the business on the farm.
Suckler cows and breeding heifers 80 Store and finishing cattle 100 Using "Standard Labour Requirement Data" produced for agricultural and horticultural activities as agreed by DEFRA, SEERAD, and DANI under the UK Farm Classification Working Party, the total labour requirement for Mylvoirrey Farm can be calculated - see Appendix 1.
Taking account of the cropping and livestock carried on the farm, it is calculated that the labour required is 1.48 labour units.
The size of the unit and the stock numbers carried therefore justify one person engaged full time in agricultural activities.
The following points should also be taken into consideration:-
There is currently no agriculturally tied dwelling house on the farm. Due to animal welfare and security considerations, it is essential that those individuals charged with the care and welfare of the livestock are resident on the unit.
During the calving period, livestock require regular supervision both day and night. It is therefore practical, convenient and safer in animal welfare terms that the person(s) involved are resident on the farm. In terms of calving cows, residence on the unit ensures someone is available to deal with pre and post partum complications quickly and effectively.
The site proposed for a dwelling house would not involve the loss of any trees, hedges or walls. As such, the natural heritage value of the area would not be adversely affected.
