The two existing sandpits exploiting inland outwash sands on the Isle of Man are at Ballaharra and Lhergydhoo. The production from the Ballaharra and Lhergydhoo Sandpits has been as follows:
As shown by the production figures, whilst Lhergydhoo Sandpit has steadily increased production, Ballaharra production has fallen by approximately one third between 1989 and 1992.
It is considered unlikely that the demand for sand will increase substantially above the levels of 1991 and 1992 and a total demand for the Isle of Man not exceeding approximately 40,000 tonnes per annum is expected. The division of production between the two pits is expected to remain roughly equal with each pit producing a variety of end products.

7.8.4 Existing Resources with Planning Permission
Both Ballaharra and Lherghydhoo are operating under valid planning permissions, the limits of which are shown on Mineral Plan No. 6.
Based on a plan of the Ballaharra Pit dated 11 October 1993 it is estimated that there are a further 250,000 tonnes of sand available above the water table within the planning permission area giving a further life of approximately 12 years.
Sugarray Limited has recently extended the area with planning permission of the Lhergydhoo area eastwards as far as the public highway. This extension will release a further 150,000 tonnes of sand above the water table i.e. a further 7 to 8 years production at existing production rates.
7.8.5 Need for Release of Further Reserves
It has been demonstrated that there are sufficient resources of sand with planning permission to meet probable demand until the year 2000. After that period it is estimated that the Lhergydhoo Sand Pit will be exhausted and there will therefore be a requirement for one of the following:
Release of land adjacent to Lherghydhoo Sandpit.
Development of a new location.
Increased production at Ballaharra Pit to meet the full demand.
