Site
The property 52 Strand Street, Douglas, is a three storey terraced property which runs along the eastern side of Strand Street, north of Howard Street. The property has been zoned under the Douglas Local Plan Order 1998 as being within a predominately shopping use; the property is not within a Conservation Area, nor is it a Registered Building.
Planning History
Erection of a double-sided illuminated projecting box sign (85/00269/D) – approved; Erection of a single-sided, illuminated fascia sign, H. Samuel’s Shop premises (85/00500/D) – approved; Alterations to entrance (87/00563/B) – approved; Erection of advertising signage (98/01455/D) – approved;
Installation of illuminated advertising signage (06/00600/D) – under consideration.
Proposal
Installation of a new shop front, and fascia.
Representations
The Douglas Corporation have considered the application and have no objection.
Disability Access Officer has recommended:-
Entrance should be accessible to an unassisted wheelchair user. Where there is full-length glass doors fitted they should be marked in some way at mid height to assist people with sight impairment. It is preferable to have automatic doors but where this is not the case then the doors should not be so heavy as to require a pulling force exceeding twenty Newton’s, measured at the leading edge, to open the door.
We have received no privately written representations objecting to the application.
Assessment / recommendation
The proposal which is similar to the majority of shop fronts along Stand Street would seem to be acceptable and would fit well within the existing property and the street scene.
For these reasons the proposal would seem to be appropriate in these locations and therefore my recommendation is for an approval.
I consider that the following meet the criteria of Government Circular 1/06 and should be afforded interested party status:
