Xcel, originally named Pro-Active started trading from its present location in November 1996. It was founded by Scott Bird, Jon Knight and Adrian Gilmour all of whom had previous experience in the fitness industry. This wealth of knowledge and experience led to an instant membership base. Both Scott Bird and Adrian Gilmour were already well known and established class instructors which meant the club enjoyed a strong following of regular class goers to compliment the gym enthusiasts.
The above resulted in the club having a well rounded approach to fitness and with exercise programs available to suit everyone from the young to the old and the fit to the beginner we appealed to everyone and still do.
As the club membership increased so did the equipment level, which in turn made us even more versatile and more user friendly. The club is now equipped to deal with all eventualities in fitness, we even have equipment that can rehabilitate injuries and often receive referrals from local doctors.
Xcel now has several well-known independent personal trainers using its facility to train their clients this is due to level of service we provide them.
In September 2001 Adrian Gilmour resigned from being a director to pursue another career and both Jon Knight and Scott Bird purchased his share.
To date Xcel is run by Jon Knight, Scott Bird and employs Martin Malone a very versatile instructor, Martin teaches several classes and coaches in the gym along side both Jon and Scott.
Between the three of us we have managed to create a professional and friendly environment incorporating training programs and equipment suitable for the needs of the modern Health Club and its wide verity of members.

The attendance records show numbers going from 131 at the beginning of the week down to only 65 on a Friday, which suggests traffic should be less than half on a Friday compared to a Monday and Tuesday.

In our current location membership numbers peaked at 414 on 27 April 2003 please note membership numbers fluctuate from month to month and can be affected by seasonal events and weather.
As these statistics have been taken after nearly nine years of trading and in that time our highest figure was 414 we cannot see numbers rising above 500.
We feel that relocating the club to Onchan will have drop off effect and have allowed a loss 25 % in our current membership, but due to fact we will be the only club of this nature in Onchan we foresee our membership figures being restored within the first year.
Even with a 25% increase from Onchan residents and no losses that would mean a membership figure of around 429.
| OUT OF TOWN | 68 |
| ONCHAN | 127 |
| DOUGLAS | 148 |
| ONCHAN | 41 |
| OUT OF TOWN | 68 |
| DOUGLAS | 234 |
Please note if these predictions are correct that would mean 11% of our membership are off peak members who do not live in Onchan and cannot use the club after 4pm and 37% would now live in Onchan.
The conclusion from this is that after 4pm 48% of our membership would either be in walking distance or not able to use the facility.
Average attendance from Monday to Friday was approximately 108 per day the highest figure was 131 the lowest figure being 65 these figures were taken from attendance records for the week commencing 28 February 2005.
