Proposed Kitchen Extension Robinson's Ballapaddag
Robinson's have been developing various prepared lines to meet current demands within the food retail trade. This means the food preparation is carried out on the Island and the local shops and restaurants are not dependent on imported produce.
The present kitchen was set up as a test to see if a suitable product could be prepared. It is 25 m from the present high care food packaging area and when food is being prepared it has to be chilled and sealed to be taken from the kitchen to the packaging area.
In order to produce a competitive product this double handing has to be avoided and the proposed extension allows the product to be cooked and packed in the same area.
The proposed extension uses an area adjacent to the present food packaging area which was used for a link route around the site. With the development of Eden Park this route is no longer requirement.
The building uses similar materials to the present building with blockwork walls, plastic windows, painted timber doors and a metal roof. The roof is nearly flat which is much easier to construct and provides necessary head room.
The drainage is all part of the existing system although re-siting the kitchen will allow a larger grease trap to be installed. Waste water is being treated in a wetland and foul water using the new septic tank/wetland system. Other waste is recycled were practical and some vegetable waste is being composed.
Health and Safety
This is a single storey building with a flat roof which provides the safest way of extending the building. All products are well tested and the building can be easily maintained.
Sustainability
The building uses tried and tested materials and a high level of insulation. It provides a local source of prepared food and deals with all waste in a responsible manner.
