Officer's Report
This application relates to the curtilage of an end of terrace house fronting the main road opposite the Waterfall Hotel car park in Glen Maye.
The proposal is to erect a timber pergola 26ft long 4ft wide and 6ft 6ins tall along the access path to the house and the other two in the terrace with a 4ft high decorative trellis. The pathway is a 'right of way' to all three cottages and the previous protective hedge has died. The owner states that because the path is higher than the road it is hazardous and the pergola, with infill, will provide an instant decorative but safer boundary.
The proposed pergola is on a bend in the road and in a highly visible location within the village. The trees and hedgerows form a more acceptable softer screen for the properties in this location than the harder form of the proposed wooden trellis and pergola. It is accepted however that from a safety point of view there is a requirement for a barrier and any plants would take time to grow to provide this. The trellis and pergola is at least partially open in nature and will allow views of the existing
plants and trees in the garden behind and on balance providing it is stained green to reduce the impact on the view from the road it is considered acceptable.
