Officer's Report
The site represents the farmholding of Ballamilghyn and Baljean Farms located to the west of Laxey village. The farm has a collection of farm buildings including a number of farm dwellings most of which were justified by the size and intensity of the farming operations. "Proposed" (the works have been undertaken already) is the creation of a corral for the cattle in the winter time. This is something being promoted by the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry and indeed they have one at Knockaloe. In some circumstances such corrals will not require planning permission but this depends very much on the amount of engineering operations required to create the facility. In this case the corral is quite large - over 200 m in length and 20 m deep. The area is bounded by earth banks and a row of fencing to keep the cattle in. The area is covered in a depth of wood chips to soak up the effluent from the cattle.
Despite the structure being considerable in size, it is located within the farm and as such not generally visible within the landscape as something out of place.
