Laxey River Weir Opposite, New Fire Station, Mines Road, Laxey, Isle Of Man, IM4 7nj
The proposal involved reconstructing the downstream apron of the Laxey River Weir, located within the riverbed opposite the new Fire Station on Mines Road. The method involved placing large boulders of 1–3 tonnes to fill the existing scour hole, topped with progressively smaller boulders and river gravels, with the river temporarily dammed and diverted during works. The works were required under the Water and Sewerage Authority's legal obligations for Main Rivers under the Land Drainage Act 1934, to prevent ongoing scour from undermining and collapsing the weir structure. The site lies within the Laxey Conservation Area.
The works were judged acceptable because they would enhance the drainage performance of the watercourse without adversely affecting the appearance or quality of the river or the character of the Laxey Conservation Area. The proposal met the relevant policies of the Isle of Man Strategic Plan 2007 and the Laxey and Lonan Area Plan Order 2005, and raised no concerns regarding public amenity, private amenity, or highway safety.
