Formalised entrance to Brookdale Plantation from Fern Glen and Installation of footbridge
Brookdale Plantation lies between Glen Auldyn and the Mountain Road in the Parish of Lezayre (Grid Reference 435925).
Public access is permitted to this plantation for general recreation. The venue is popular with local residents for regular short walks, as well as for long distance ramblers who use the plantation tracks as a convenient ascent or descent to or from surrounding hill land.
Traditionally the public accessed the plantation via a track which runs past the dwellings of The Barn and Ballameanaugh (GR 434930). However, due to land ownership issues this route is no longer available. Subsequently, the Department wish to formalise an alternative access point directly from Fern Glen Road which is already well used. (photo 2)
The project would involve the installation of a pedestrian bridge similar in construction to those installed by the Department in the Manx National Glens. (see concept photo 3). The bridge would be seen to meet expressed demand whilst providing additional convenience to walkers wishing to cross the stream.
As the main scenic attraction in the area is the adjacent valley of Glen Auldyn and, as the access at Brookdale is already in use, it is not anticipated that formalising access will create any additional parking issues in Fern Glen. Fern Glen is a quiet cul-de-sac road with no through way.
The Department has however consulted with Derek Sewell of the Department of Transport and suggested as a precautionary measure that 'No Parking' signs could be erected in the passing place immediately adjacent to the plantation access, as simulated in photo 4.
Also subject to planning approval, the Department would monitor parking in the Glen and work with DoT on a minor road widening scheme should it become necessary.
