11 July 2013 · Delegated
44, The Crofts, Castletown, Isle Of Man, IM9 1lz
This application sought permission to alter the external finish on the rear elevation of 44 The Crofts, Castletown, a property within a Conservation Area. The works proposed included rendering the rear elevation and removing chimney pots. The Department of Infrastructure refused the application on 11 July 2013. The decision notice identified the property as one of the few buildings in the terrace to have retained so many of its original features, making the proposed changes particularly harmful. The rendering and removal of chimney pots were found to be at odds with the requirement to preserve or enhance the character of the building and the Conservation Area, and permission was therefore refused.
The Department of Infrastructure refused this application on 11 July 2013. The decision was based on the property being one of the few remaining buildings in the terrace to have kept so many original features. Rendering the rear elevation and removing chimney pots was judged to harm the character of both the building and the Conservation Area it sits within.
