Pizza Hut, 1-5, Walpole Avenue, Douglas, Isle Of Man, IM1 2lt
This application sought permission to erect illuminated and non-illuminated advertising signage at 1, 3 and 5 Walpole Avenue, Douglas, a building with a retained Victorian appearance located within the Douglas Promenades Conservation Area. Consent was refused on the basis that the proposed signage, taken as a whole, was incompatible with its surroundings. The decision identified the signage's size, design, illumination, and the visual dominance of the fascia background — including its colour, format, and lettering size — as factors that would harm the character and appearance of the conservation area rather than preserve or enhance it. The decision notice was signed by N J Black.
Consent was refused because the proposed signage was considered harmful to the Douglas Promenades Conservation Area. Its size, design, illumination, and the visual dominance of the fascia background in terms of colour and lettering were judged to be at odds with the Victorian character of the building and its surroundings, and would not preserve or enhance the conservation area.
