The application site represents the curtilage of 6 Auckland Terrace Ramsey. The existing property is a three storey townhouse located in an area identified as Mixed Use Town Centre. The property is a Registered Building located on the North side of Parliament Street.
Proposed is the erection of advertising signage, the sign would be of natural stone, measuring 1.2 m in height and 0.5 m wide, and would be positioned in the front garden of the property.
The majority of previous applications for this site are for internal alterations, due to this current application being for external alterations, many of them were not of relevance, the following were considered relevant with regard to the current application:

The above application was approved at appeal.
The application site is located in an area of Mixed Use Town Centre identified on the Ramsey Local Plan Order 1998. Due to its Registered Building status, it should be assessed against the appropriate policies, such as Environment Policy 32, General Policy 2 and General Policy 6 from the Isle of Man Strategic Plan (20th June 2007)
Department of Transport Highways and Traffic Division do not oppose the application as it has no traffic management, parking or road safety implications. Ramsey Commissioners have no objection to the proposal.
The proposal should be assessed in light of Environment Policy 32, which states: "Extensions or alterations to a Registered Building which would affect detrimentally its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest will not be permitted."
It is considered that the proposal would not have a harmful impact on the character of the building 0 have a negative impact on the streetscape. The use of natural stone would be complimentary to the property and the landscape, and would enhance the frontage of the building.
The following points from General Policy 2 should also be considered in the assessment of the proposal: "(c) does not affect adversely the character of the surrounding landscape or townscape;
The proposed signage is thought to respect the site and surroundings in terms of siting and design, and the use of natural stone would have minimal affect on the character and visual amenity of the locality.
Due to the nature of the proposal it is relevant to consider General Policy 6: "Within our towns and villages, the display of external advertisements will be permitted on the site of building to which they relate provided they:
Having assessed the proposal against the above policy, it is judged that the advertisement would be of a high standard in terms of design and materials, and would be in-keeping with the character of the area.
For the above reasons the application is considered acceptable, and is recommended for approval.
The Department of Transport and the Local Authority are, by virtue of the Town and Country Planning (Development Procedure) Order 2005, paragraph 6 (5) (c) and (d), considered "interested persons" and as such should be afforded party status.
