Rest & Be Thankful, Slieu Lewaigue, Lewaigue, Ramsey, Isle Of Man, IM7 1bh
The application sought permission to build a first floor extension over an existing roof terrace at 'Rest And Be Thankful', a grand two-storey Georgian property on the A2 Ramsey to Douglas Coast road. The dwelling sits directly on the highway in open countryside, with a parking area and garden to the rear. The site falls within an area designated as part Woodland and part High Landscape or Coastal Value and Scenic Significance under the Isle of Man Development Plan. The key planning issues were whether the extension respected the scale, form, and appearance of the existing traditionally styled property, and whether it would harm the character of the countryside. The extension was proposed to the rear of the dwelling, where it would not be visible from the main road. Officers concluded the development was relatively modest, respected the proportions of the host building, and would not harm the visual appearance of the surrounding area or the quality of the landscape.
The extension was permitted because it was considered modest in scale, sited to the rear and out of public view, and designed to respect the proportion, form, and appearance of the existing Georgian dwelling. Officers were satisfied it would not harm the character or quality of the designated landscape, meeting the relevant countryside and housing extension policies.
