One of the biggest reasons for taking on the renovation of this cottage was to introduce as many sustainable and renewable elements as possible to ensure that in the future the cottage will be an environmentally "friendly" building. Insulation, orientation to the sun and solar panels generating electricity to name just a few.
Another aspect of this is changing from a diesel car to an electric car which is due to arrive in September. The design of the garage has been with the intention again to orientate it so that it is south facing and will have solar panels to generate electricity to charge the car with the addition of a storage battery so that any excess can be stored or fed back to the house. All these solar elements and the battery are supplied by a local company. One of the key differences in changing from a diesel car to an electric one is that garaging becomes essential for charging and especially with a storage battery which for safety reasons needs to be housed. The garage will not only supply this but will also provide storage for gardening equipment and at the back a log store.
We have kept the garage design low so that its impact is minimal but the benefits above will make my environmental impact far less and hopefully is in line with the government's expectation for Manx residents.
