Case for an Agricultural Dwelling
Shenvalley Farm.
The ownership of Shenvalley farm is a partnership of three people. Ian Cowell aged 41, one-partner-bearing retirement and the third having just reached retirement. Ian and Sandra Cowell live at Slieau Whallian Park, St Johns the other 2 partners live at Upper and Lower Tosaby within the blue boundary but remote from the farm buildings.
They farm a total of 689 acres, 282 owned at Shenvalley and 407 acres of rented land which is situated at Brookfield Foxdale, Balnahow Santon, Oatlands Santon, Farmhill Douglas and Ballafurt Port Grenough.
Shenvalley has a stock of:
- 80 Holstein dairy cows
- 30 Young dairy stock
- 50 Young beef cattle from birth to 6 months
- 70 Beef Cows
- 200 Beef cows of various ages
- 700 Breeding ewes
- 1200 Lambs
The dairy herd along with all young stock are based at Shenvalley for the winter months.
An on-site farmhouse is required as the livestock require attention 24/7 and we are greatly concerned that the cattle are unattended overnight. On occasions it is necessary to keep watch over cows that are calving through the night. At present there are no facilities such as toilet, kitchen etc. Security is also a concern as there are medicine cabinets, semen tanks, chemicals, feed stuffs, milk tank and diesel tank.
The farmhouse on site has not been habited for years, and is beyond economical repair. It does however currently serve a purpose as an agricultural store.
Shenvalley has farm assured status for dairy, beef and lamb and is also a member of the Countryside Care Scheme.
Living at the farm would ensure the future of the dairy herd as well as continuing the family history as the 6th generation to farm at Shenvalley. A supporting letter from Raymond Cox, veterinary Surgeon is also attached.
