Castle Rushen, The Quay, Castletown, Isle Of Man, IM9 1ld
This application sought permission for a series of alterations at Castle Rushen in Castletown, including relocating the visitor shop, relocating and replacing the drawbridge, and constructing a new ramp and steps to the ground floor of the keep. The works were linked to a separate registered building consent application. Castle Rushen is described as a visually and architecturally dominant feature within its curtilage, with access available from Castle Quay and Market Square. The central planning question was whether the proposed works would adversely affect the character and historic interest of the building, balanced against the aim of providing greater accessibility for all visitors. The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, acting through its Committee, permitted the application on 3 October 2017, subject to one condition. The officer also recommended approval.
