At present the Island offers a number of outdoor skateparks which meet the needs of riders but can be limiting due to adverse weather and daylight during winter months. We believe that there is a need for an indoor skatepark on the Island after carrying out research and finding a number of residents frequently go off Island to use indoor skateparks.
We propose to construct a purpose-built indoor skatepark that can be used throughout the year, offering a warm, dry, and well-lit space. This will be open to all ages, from beginners to professional riders and across a number of disciplines. We will also provide a 'chill out' area and tuck shop offering a limited selection of food and drink and a place for parents to wait. A small retail space will also be created. This will be part of the reception and will be selling Ramp It Up clothing and a selection of accessories and spare parts. This area will be no more than 5% of the total park.
The proposed site is Bays 9-11, Head Road, Douglas, the approx size is 4,800 sqft.
The reason for using this size unit is to accommodate an indoor skate park for use by skateboards, BMX, scooters, and other disciplines. A skate park consists of a number of 'runs', each run consists of a number of different ramps/jumps which requires a large, open, and uninterrupted space. Due to this, the majority of buildings are not suitable for the requirements. This can be evidenced by a number of UK indoor skate parks which are also located in industrial units, see Ramp One (Worrington) and Rampworx (Liverpool) for example.
The site comes with 10 allocated parking spaces and there is also 25 communal parking spaces on the industrial park itself. A further 10 spaces can be created using a parcel of land adjacent to the building if required.
After carrying out some market research, we found the majority of our customers are under 16 so will either make their own way using their bikes/scooters or will be dropped off and collected by parents.
We feel this unit is ideal for this purpose due to its location in close proximity to Douglas bus station.
Our opening hours will be:
