Castle Rushen, The Quay, Castletown, Isle Of Man, IM9 1ld
This registered building application, submitted by Manx National Heritage, sought consent for a series of alterations to Castle Rushen in Castletown. The proposed works included relocating the visitor shop, relocating and replacing the drawbridge, and constructing a new ramp and steps to the ground floor of the keep to improve visitor access. Castle Rushen is described as a visually and architecturally dominant feature in the heart of Castletown, with its main entrance approached from the east through an open arched stone doorway. The central planning issue was whether the proposed alterations would adversely affect the character and historic interest of this significant listed building. The application was approved by the Committee on 3 October 2017, subject to one condition. The decision reflected a judgement that the works could provide greater accessibility for all visitors while maintaining the castle's historic character.
The application was approved by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. The key planning consideration was whether the proposed works would harm the character and historic interest of Castle Rushen as a listed building. The works were judged acceptable, balancing improved accessibility for visitors with the need to preserve the castle's character.
